Potluck Invitation Wording: 26 Examples to Copy
A potluck invite has one more job than a normal invite. Besides the when and where, it has to sort out who brings what. If it doesn't, you get four bags of chips, three pasta salads and no main dish.
Below are 26 examples, sorted by the kind of potluck. Further down there are lines for the "what to bring" part, which is where most potlucks go wrong.

What every potluck invite needs
- Date, time and place.
- That it's a potluck. Say it early, not in the last line.
- What you're providing: the main, drinks, plates, nothing.
- How guests say what they're bringing.
- Anything guests should know about allergies or dietary needs.
- How to RSVP and by when.
Two to three weeks ahead is enough for most potlucks. For a holiday potluck, send it a little earlier, since people plan their cooking around it.
Wording for the "what to bring" part
Most potluck trouble starts with "just bring anything". A few lines that work better:
- "We've got the main and drinks. Please bring a side, a salad or a dessert."
- "Please say what you're bringing when you reply so we get a bit of everything."
- "Bring enough for about 8 people." (Adjust to the size of the party.)
- "Please label your dish if it has nuts, gluten or meat."
- "No time to cook? Drinks, bread or ice are just as welcome."
Hosts who've done a few potlucks mostly split it into categories: mains, sides, salads, desserts, drinks. Then everyone picks one and you can see the gaps.
Sending it
With the free potluck invite maker you put the wording on a card and share one link by text, email or WhatsApp. Guests reply with their name, no signup. With a free account you can turn on potluck mode on the event: you add slots like "Main dish (2)", "Salad (2)" and "Dessert (3)", and guests pick one while they RSVP. The list fills up in front of everyone, so the fifth salad doesn't happen.
If you already have an invite and only need the sign-ups, the potluck sign-up page does that part on its own. For the food amounts, the party food calculator gives a rough number per guest.
Have a good potluck :)
