What every 50th birthday invite needs
- Whose birthday it is, with the full name if old colleagues or distant family are invited.
- Date, time and place. For a party that runs late, give a start time and let the end be open.
- The kind of party: dinner, open house, dancing, a weekend away.
- Dress code, if there is one.
- Gifts: welcome, please don't, or a charity instead.
- Whether it's a surprise. Put that at the very top.
- How to RSVP and by when.
Send it six to eight weeks ahead. People who have to travel need the time, and a lot of them will be booking around their own family plans.
RSVP timing for a 50th
A 50th often has a restaurant booking or a caterer behind it, and both want a number about a week before. So:
- Ask for replies two to three weeks before the party.
- Say why: "so we can give the restaurant a number" gets more replies than "RSVP by".
- For a surprise, put the RSVP somewhere the birthday person won't see it. A group chat they're in is not that place.
- Ask about plus-ones and kids in the reply, not after.
