Dinner Party Invitation Wording: 25 Examples to Copy

• Thomas

A dinner party needs an exact number more than most parties do. Whether it's six or eight people changes the shopping, the seating and how many plates you have to borrow from the neighbors.

So here are 25 examples, sorted by the kind of dinner. Pick one, change the details, and ask about allergies while you're at it. At the end there's a short note on what to include and how to send it so the replies come back in one place.

Dietary-needs lines

One line near the RSVP is enough. A few that don't sound like a form:

  • "Please tell us about allergies or anything you don't eat when you reply."
  • "Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free? Say so, there'll be something good for you."
  • "The main is fish. If that doesn't work for you, let us know and we'll make something else."
  • "Tell us what you can't eat and we'll plan around it."

What every dinner party invite needs

Guests read for these, so put them in:

  • Date, the time to arrive, and roughly when you'll sit down.
  • The address, and which buzzer if it's an apartment.
  • Who's invited: just them, or with a partner.
  • What you're cooking, or at least the theme.
  • Dress code, if there is one.
  • How to RSVP and by when.

Ask about diets in the invite itself. It's a lot easier to plan around a vegetarian on Tuesday than at the door on Saturday.

RSVP lines that get answers

The invite sets the tone, but the RSVP line decides whether you know how many chairs to put out. A few that work:

  • "Please reply by Wednesday, I'm shopping on Thursday."
  • "Let me know by the 20th. The table seats eight and I'd like to know who's at it."
  • "Tap the link to say yes or no, and tell us what you don't eat."
  • "Partners welcome, add their name when you reply."

Name a date and say why you need it. Then make replying easy.

Sending it

Dinner invites are small, so it's tempting to text everyone one by one. Then one person replies in the group chat, two reply privately, one says "should work", and you're counting chairs across four threads.

Send a link instead. With the free dinner party invite maker you put your wording on a card, share one link, and guests reply with their name. With a free account you can add a question for allergies and diets, so the answers end up in one list. No signup for them, and the count updates as replies come in.

If you already have a card and only need the replies, the dinner party RSVP page does that part on its own.

Have a lovely dinner :)
