Why Guests Prefer Invitations With No Signup
Updated September 2026.
Think about the last invite link you got in a group chat. You tapped it, meant to say yes, and then the page asked you to create an account. Or enter your phone number and wait for a code. Or install an app.
If you closed it and thought "later", you're the guest this post is about.
What a guest is being asked
An RSVP is a tiny favor. Tell the host whether you're coming. When the page asks for more than that, the trade feels off:
- An account means another password, for a site you'll use once.
- An email address means a newsletter you didn't ask for.
- A phone number means a code to type in and a number handed to a company you've never heard of.
- An app means a download for one tap.
None of that is hard on its own. It's just more than the favor is worth, so people put it off. And "later" is where RSVPs go to die.
What a name-only reply feels like
Open the link, type your name, tap "I'll be there" or "Can't make it". Done. On a phone that's about ten seconds, which is short enough to do it while you're still in the chat where the link came from.
That's the whole difference. The guest doesn't have to decide whether the party is worth an account. They just answer.
"But how do I change my answer?"
This is the question I get most from hosts. On JoinMyEvent, after a guest replies they get a personal edit link on the confirmation page, and their browser remembers them on the invite page. Either way they come back, change the answer, and the host sees the update. No login. More on that in the edit link post.
For the guests who don't do websites
Grandparents, the friend who still has a flip phone mindset, the parent replying between school pickup and dinner. A form with one field and two buttons works for all of them. Anything with a signup step is where they text the host instead, and now the host is doing data entry.
If you're the host
The guest experience is your response rate. Every step you add costs you answers. If you want the host side of this argument, with what to look for in a tool, it's in Event invitations that don't need guest accounts.
Or just try the guest side yourself: create a free invite, open the link on your phone, and reply. It should feel like nothing. That's the point :)
